Knee pain is one of the more common ailments involving your musculoskeletal system. It is usually caused by either overuse of the knee joint, arthritis, or injury.
Stress on the knee cap (patella) is the most common cause of non-traumatic knee pain. During running or walking, if the patella does not move smoothly or sufficiently on the femur, abnormal
stresses are placed on the tendons, cartilage, and ligaments. The problem usually is caused by imbalances in the quadriceps muscles of the thigh, which attach to the patella, and are supposed to move with it.
The associated pain is experienced while running, climbing, jumping, stair climbing, or getting up from prolonged sitting.
Imbalances in the muscles on the inside of the thigh when strained and tight can cause pain on the inside side of the knee. Lower back problems also cause imbalances in the muscles associated with knee movement, and are the cause of knee pain. Similarly, foot problems are another cause of knee pain.
The main treatment for knee pain is restoring proper balance of the muscles and movement patella and other joints of the knee, and correcting any subluxations of the lower spine and foot problems. In certain cases, a brace is used to help with the alignment of the patella or to stabilize the joint. Chiropractors are ideally trained to provide the proper diagnosis and management of these problems.
